In many countries the law requires that they sell unlocked iPhones. However, in the US many people usually don't have the opportunity to buy an iPhone that has been unlocked from a service provider, which is precisely what the service providers want.

d to the annual contracts that work for the service providers for many reasons. A service provider's two year contract is one of the reasons is that the real cost of a cell phone is lost. For example, a service provider sells a customer an iPhone for $99 when its real cost is $599. The expense of the monthly contracts over the course of 24 months means they will regain the actual cost of the iPhone and much more.

Also, service providers are tied exclusively to the iPhone and they make large profits based on the numbers of users if they use one of the iPhones that they provide the service for. This is exactly how AT&T's deal exclusively with Apple works to provide the iPhone to US customers. This one deal alone has made them millions of customers.

This is exactly why AT&T doesn't want unlocked iPhones to show up in the US. This makes some of the websites on the Internet that sell brand new unlocked iPhones complete with the full Apple warranty quite amazing. Although all of the iPhones have sold out, they were selling for $799 apiece and it was the first time that US customers had the opportunity to buy an unlocked iPhone.

Keep in mind that there's nothing illegal about any of this. These retailers on the Internet have deals that are obtained by importing iPhones from other countries, such as Belgium or Taiwan, where it is only normal business to sell an unlocked iPhone.
Still, this is a great deal for iPhone users who want to be able to take their iPhones to the service provider that gives them the best service. If you want to buy an unlocked iPhone, you need to keep watching these retailers that are online since they will undoubtedly get more iPhones in sooner or later.

If Apple would only sell their iPhones unlocked as a normal part of business it would really make for a better cell phone industry in the US. But, with the profits of the service providers being as high as they are don't expect this to happen any time soon.
